Voldemort Van Gogh Award for Astronomical Terrorism

To Robin D. Owens for her art piece "Ace of Spades, The Dark Mark."

My Sorting Hat Costume (with big red lips for Limonwarts) and little ditty went over well, even though I just realized I didn't do the hat brim. Darn!

Then we did skits and I was Harry Potter twice (mixed in with the movies Happy Feet and the Day the Earth Stood Still) and Ron Weasley once (Titanic). It was interesting seeing how different people wanted to structure the improv skits, one always wanted to go for the big laugh, I wanted a little story scene...

After that we played the Werewolf card game and I was munched 2-3 times by the Werewolves and lynched by my fellow peasants once.

Following, we finished with the World's Greatest Party Game, a charades type thing -- everyone puts about 5 names in the hat, then we pull and have 30 seconds to describe the person to your team, and next round you have 30 seconds and can only describe the person in 2 words, 3rd round is all charades. It's always odd which names are duplicated, especially mass zeitgeist when such a person is not even spoken about. Rasputin and Elvis Presley and Hillary Clinton appeared 3 times, Wonder Woman and Harry Potter twice...I wasn't feeling up to the top of my form, but our team did manage to pull the win out...sheer silliness and rousing fun.

So now it's after one and I can post then go to bed.

May you find many avenues for your creativity today.

Snape the Joker, Harry Potter Deck of Cards

A while back I bought a blank deck of cards (for SoulCollage(R)) but learned they were too small and a couple of days ago I had this idea of making a Harry Potter deck at the Karvel Kon art show...I am PITIFUL at drawing, and usually do collage at which I am not SO pitiful, but I wanted to sell the idea to some of the others, who are actually artists.

So I brought the cards and made the first -- The Ace of Spades, the Dark Mark, and the second, the Ace of Hearts, the Goblet of Fire. Then we all assigned different characters to different cards -- Spades for villains, Hearts for those close to Harry, Clubs for Order of the Phoenix (Fighters -- Hagrid King), Diamonds (Dumbledore King), for all the rest. Then we committed art. Even those who'd only seen the movies or read the first couple of books long ago, helped. Dana doing Firenze the centaur (hey, we ARE all sf/f people), and maybe Ffawks (sp) later.

Snape was, of course, the Joker, and Gail Barton, a real artist did him, sneering on one side, smiling on the other...

Anyway, my cards ARE really pitiful -- the two Aces and Kreatcher (I cribbed from the book, but instead of the nose being sharp, mine's a little rounded and bulbous on the end where my hand shook and looks a little like a male appendage, especially issuing from between round cheeks -- really I should not be allowed to Commit Art), but others aren't too bad. I think we're almost up to 20 now. This is, of course, copyright infringement, but our work will never be published except for the regress report or sold except for a few cents--dollars to each other.

We got a wonderful syllabus (Course on Magical ART last night), which I'll probably put up when I get home. I did a badge (also pitiful with my name in unintentionally crooked letters), and got a white t-shirt with the colorful Limonworts logo -- Cat, Owl, Lungfish and Bookworm.

I spent too much money in the general store, but I don't go into craft stores often and I bought papers for my journal. The hotel is now not beige and soft green outside but yellow and orange, and there was an orange tabby cat greeting me when I arrived -- looking much like Wilbur, my Mom's, who I've been checking on the last 3 days.

Gathering in the Great Hall for breakfast at 9, so hopefully I'll be able to ge some writing done.

I still need to make my costume and requested I be first. I must buy black garbage bags and duct tape (with a nice silvery sheen). One of my friend Jane's cloaks (Cloaks by Campbell) appeared so I think there will be dementors coming, I should have brought mine, too. Reminds me of Karvel Kon XX (the double X files) where we all showed up in the masquerade in black raincoats (I was an alien flasher -- sex crime -- one of my finest moments, got many laughs).

That's it from Limon.

May you be creative in many ways today.

Testing from Limon

This is the first time I've been able to get online from my laptop in Limon, so it's a test.

Below is the "Con Suite" the Tiffany room. It has an additional bedroom opposite this wall that is excellent for backstage for the skits.

By Sunday morning all our art will be hung on the walls & doors of this suite and will be auctioned at that time.

Fast Footwork -- Experienced Writer

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket I got behind in some of my other-stuff duties, i.e. did not submit a proposal for the RMFW conference. Luckily they wanted a romance panel. Now I've been on terrible "romance panels" and listened to some, too.

Well, today they wanted info on the romance panel. Now.

So I called up and emailed my good friends and brainstormed a little and in just a few minutes put together what I think will be an excellent panel. I did this because I know my friends, know we can do this, know we will prepare (or actually can speak for 10-15 minutes by ourselves on the topic). I amazed myself. But this is what you can do if you've got good friends, good ideas, and experience.

Elements of the Romance Genre:
All you need to know about writing romance[SNORT!] including Plot, Characterization, Emotional Depth, Setting and Worldbuilding (guess which topic is mine?). Presented by four experienced authors who have published over 75 books between them.

I like it and am pleased. Considering I once spent over 4 months working on a seminar topic that was ultimately rejected by RWA (I think that scarred me for working hard on a seminar before I get the go-ahead for life), I am amazed.

May you please yourself today.

Obitiuaries

Ok, you're a writer. If you are the only writer in the family, or in a bunch of friends who are NOT writers, you will be asked to write obituaries. Even if you are grieving. Trust me, I know this. So be prepared.

Think of good stuff now. I like the word "transition" myself, and my novella, The Road to Adventure is all about second chances at life, so I've got some words down to refer to in a crises.

May you be blessed with a lack of writing obituaries for many moons to come.

Stories: What I Know And When I Know It

I don't know whether this interests readers, but it does for me as a writer -- what scenes come first, maybe even before a story idea, definitely before the plot and absolutely before the synopsis.

Yes, characters come first, but for me they aren't in a vacuum, they are acting in a scene.

And the Summoning series were some of those old "tell myself before I go to sleep stories" so I DID have scenes...usually skipped over whole parts of the story.

Take Calli's story (my current book Protector of the Flight): I KNOW I had the scene with Marrec and Lady Hallard on the terrace (all of that scene except for the addition of her previous volaran master) I had the Pairbonding ritual and knew that when they went up to bed, Marrec would be shy and Calli wild (because of the drug she took during the ritual). I also had some scenes that never made it into the book because I didn't have the overall series plot -- them finding the perfect home in the mountains in a very independent town, being accepted as leaders and bringing that part of the culture into trusting the rest of the people. Marrec teaching Calli to ground and control her Powers.

But I think that's all I had.

Sorceress of Faith was even sketchier (and I think I have notes on another Sorceress story that's a little similar but set in another world). I knew that when Marian arrived she would be fought over by the Sorcerers and Sorceresses and originally she went with Jaquar. But Jaquar hadn't lost his parents and wasn't so hurt and grieving.

For Guardian of Honor, I had the idea of the fenceposts falling, and how Alexa made new fenceposts and the boundary, those were the first ideas. (I actually found my ORIGINAL bits of this scene on my computer, transferred from handwritten). I was tired of people going to other dimensions and easily learning the language, so I made it so Alexa had the problem of NOT being good with languages, and when she spoke she sounded drunk. I knew she'd be travelling and meet Bastien. The idea of her grieving for her lost sister-like-friend/partner didn't happen until I had a loss of my own of a friend who worked in the cubicle next to me. The idea of Sinafin had lurked in my brain, but SINCE Alexa didn't know the language, I needed someone to tell her what was going on, and there my shapeshifter was.

As for the Heart books, I am Welsh and saw the burgeoning of all things Celtic, liked the idea of a pagan/Celtic world, had figured my historical romances weren't selling so I may as well write fantasy with romance which were definitely not selling much at the time. Then I sat down and wrote about T'Ash throwing his divination dice and it took off, especially when Zanth, the telepathic cat with attitude walked onto the page.

So that's me. Sometimes I can recall or pinpoint what comes first, sometimes things change, sometimes they come when I have to write the proposal, sometimes when I write the book.

May wonderful ideas come to you today.

Affirmation

It's easy to poke fun at affirmations and people who mumble them aloud (I wonder who that could be?), but I always consider that my Negative Inner Critic is always on the ball -- ready to deride me, and saying affirmations at least counters that...

Anyway I have this 1991 daily calendar that had affirmations, and some of them still float around my desk, again, I have no clue who wrote or published this, so I can't give full credit, if you can help, great!

October 13 (Sunday), 1991 (and I have a very good friend born on October 13):

I have the divine right to be fulfilled in all avenues of life. I am worthy of success.

I really like this, may optimism and success find you today, because you ARE worthy.

Signings -- Vampires/Succubus Blues

Well I went to the signing by Mario Acevdo (X-Rated Bloodsuckers), Jeanne Stein (The Becoming), and Richelle Mead (Succubus Blues) and bought them all. They all sound wonderful.

It was a small gathering, which surprised me -- my mentor was there, as was Ed Bryant and the soon-to-be-published Lynda Hilburn, friends and family were there as well as a couple of critique group members. Both Richelle and Jeanne were on their way to Romantic Times convention next week, and Jeanne was wonderful enough to take my Protector of the Flight wallet calendars with her (now I must notify the others whom I requested to set them out not to worry).

I had a great time talking books and writing (and IRS deductions...), Mario's very charming, Jeanne was fun and Richelle was very interesting. I'm glad to know more about her.

Jeanne's next book is coming out in July and she and I will probably sign together, me with Heart Dance, at the same place.

I gave Mario the regards from Catie Murphy in Ireland (who actually belongs to Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, she won/placed in our contest a while back).

May the business of writing please you today -- and I will start posting earlier once I finish this housesitting gig.

Take care,
Robin

Computer Settings

I customize my computer. I have a fountain pen cursor, one "wait" that is a scroll unrolling and rolling up, the other is Cinderella and her Prince dancing. I change them, as I change the desktop color (creamy, pale pink, pale blue). When I was writing HeartMate I had a "wait" of some blue-green rolling dice, no wonder that T'Ash had bloodstone Divination Dice.

Just finished changing the sounds for this year. I keep them the same for months/years, then grow tired of them and change. I have a LOT of old "themes" I brought over from my old computer that still make me smile, and some gaming companies made desktop themes, so I have WORDS like "I can help you no further, noble knight."

For years my Windows Exit was "The purpose in my life was to bring YOU to this point," which also came from a game. Then there's "Zounds!" or "Mucked up, too bad," to let me know something is Not Quite Right.

And I'm feeling better now, smiling. This house sitting is not going well because I'm having a terrible time sleeping in a different bed. I woke up at 3am and didn't want to go before the paper was delivered (it was late yesterday, I left at nearly 6). And am consequently quite grumpy in the mornings, and getting to the writing later, and blog later, and email later, etc. A week and a half more.

So whatever will get you going, do it. If you need a different scheme for writing v. other work/play, customize it. It can be part of your writing ritual like music or candles. Once, every time I closed a program it was to applause.

And if I've talked about this before, excuse me. The night wasn't good, but the sentiment stands. Do anything that might possibly make you feel good about writing.

Enjoy the sounds of your life today.

Sign Language at Signing

At the signing last night I sat in the back and noticed that there were several people who were practicing Signing when Chris Jorgenson read her book.

I thought this was a WONDERFUL idea. Chris' book, Calling for A Funeral is a contemporary amateur sleuth mystery set in Denver, and she's a good writer, so when she was doing her reading, the language was excellent to practice on.

I'm enjoying Irv Sternberg's amateur sleuth mystery, No Laughing Matter, too.

May you be inspired by others today.

Negative Inner Critic

I am doing a seminar at Romance Writers' of America's National Conference called Kill Your Negative Inner Critic! Experience the Joy of Writing!

Over the years I've thought long and hard about personifying my negative inner critic, and finally figured it out while doing The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron.

No, I'm not with many with the Wicked Witch of the West. Here he is:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
All right. This is the story. I saw an email announcing the finalists for the More Than Magic contest. Since I hadn't been notified, I figured I hadn't made it, so, glutton for punishment (but feeling pretty good on the whole), I looked and there was Sorceress of Faith!

WOW! Heart pounding stuff! VERRRRRY Cool.

Now, the thing is, I HAD been notified at a different address that I didn't think I'd used...so there was a little back and forth, are you SURE Sorceress finalled???

;)

Needless to say, it is a moment of great pleasure and satisfaction, or vice versa.

May you come closer to your dreams today.

Harry Potter and Inches (v. Wordcount)

I am still working on combining my scenes and chapters and am occasionally making my daily wordcount :( I'm not used to writing in Courier New anymore, and it seems clunky (ok, it's always seemed clunky, I'd just gotten used to it).

Now I'm beginning to think I'm in a Harry Potter book, you know "Prof So-And-So Assigned us EIGHT INCHES on Keepers of the Flame...." as each chapter creeps down the pages in Courier New...

I'm concerned about hooks, too. I'm writing shorter chapters now, and sometimes it's hard to find good chapter hooks, which I think are essential in a book.

May you write many inches today -- too many to measure!

Supporting Other Writers -- Signings

This is very important. I will be going to 3 signings this week, one in just a few minutes. Of those 3 signings, all but one of the people have bought my books, and I know at least one of THOSE actually READ one of my books.

The one tonight and Thursday are for writers who are getting back into publishing after a dry spell, so it's important to support them. I can imagine contracts drying up (knocking on wood to prevent such a thing), so I'll be there with my money and will probably read the books, too (mysteries).

I read mysteries, but I'm not sure my mystery friends read fantasy, or romance.

Yes, I am late, and frazzled again because of this housesitting gig where the person wants me to stay overnight. Not used to the bed, for sure, and ran into traffic this am, so need to be earlier or later. I should probably find a room there where I can write. Mistook stairs for hallway on Sat night and fell a few steps.

May you get all the incredible support you need today.

Disappearing Animal Companions

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketIt happens. I'm known for my animal companions as secondary characters (comic relief, mentors, tricksters), and I'm usually aware of where they are and what they're doing, and give them some good scenes.

Occasionally I start out a scene with an animal companion and it disappears. Oops. Or I think the companion hasn't been around and wouldn't they want to be in this scene?

Two fixes. One is to write them in (yes, this happened yesterday).

The other is to state why they won't be going to the birthday party to be admired (that was the first time this happened to me, in Heart Choice). "The FamCat refuses to visit Commoners in an ugly collar," the Residence said.

Or, you can combine them. I wrote in Tuckerinal yesterday and had him fall asleep on the table at the Nom de Nom (tavern). A baby feycoocu (magical shape-shifting being) is coming and he needs all his energy...

May your secondary characters be just where they need to be today and you don't forget about them.

Colorado Romance Writers

Sorry, I was preparing for the meeting and attending today. We were doing practice pitching for the conference next month. I was moderating with 5 other published authors...so I'm running late, and running late for the conference stuff, too. It's not a conference I've ever attended, though I've occasionally shown up for this or that, but Linnea Sinclair is the speaker and I love Linnea.

I'm also peeved that it looks like the security updates I loaded for windows has crashed internet explorer (I use firefox but a lot of programs I use have downloads for ie so I have to have it). Anyway, I have NO time to figure this out.

I also am due to start my house sitting duties across town this evening.

So I'm a bit frazzled. I didn't find any real good pitching things on the web, I think they're there but a little buried, or people charge for them.

Anyway, I don't have much to say except pitches are important, even when you're published you can use them as log lines in proposals or for those 25 word ads that you can buy.

That's my meagre advice for the day.

May you be pleased with any pitch you create.

Little Luxuries

I think everyone has a little luxury that they will pay extra to indulge. And I think this can be revealing in your character -- think of Alexa in Guardian of Honor and her tea. I set up WHY she thought tea was a luxury (she went through the foster care system and it was something that made her individual), why she drank tea instead of liquor (attempted date rape in college), and her choice of tea in her confrontation with the Marshalls gave them something to react to, and how they reacted showed THEIR character.

So, use this. BTW, I have started up my exercise program again and my luxury is hot baths...where I can read. I have a whirlpool tub.

Take care and indulge yourself today.

Schedules

I DO believe in schedules. But it's beginning to seem like I believe in them in theory and not in practice. To my credit, I've been writing as soon as I get up, then eating then this, email and promo stuff.

I'm up at 3:30 am because I took a nap, and when I go back, I'll put on my earphones and do my meditation.

I'm also a little anxious about this house I will be sitting in a couple of days for a friend of my Mom's (for about 2 weeks). The deal is that I will be spending the night, and I have the usual worries about locking myself out and losing the keys. Spending the night at this place across town is going to throw my meagre schedule off big-time. I'm going to take my laptop, and may leave it there. Don't know whether I'll write, then leave, or leave early in the am and write at home, probably the latter. I'll probably be doing naps, too, since I have a water bed and the place has a regular one.

Yes, I believe in schedules, and Inner Creative Child is rebellious enough NOT to be regimented. Guess who's winning. I don't need a rebellious Inner Creative child on my hands (and if that isn't a rationalization I've never heard one).

Anyway, I've also been full of good advice for everyone from my massage person to my old critique group to here to my mentor -- ladling it out, not taking it. So I guess I'll shut up.

May you follow your own good advice today.

Out of Sequence Writer, Transition Scenes

When you write out of sequence there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages. I won't go into that here because my brain is fried. After a while of out of sequence writing you MUST string them together, and I usually do that in chunks, chronologically when I absolutely have to. Usually I start feeling like an ominous cloud is hanging over my head about to rain and spit lightning down upon me.

Anyway, I usually put this off as long as possible (thus the nasty cloud) because it slows me down A LOT and it fries my brain. I haven't QUITE made my word count today but I've worked on cleaning up several chapters. That shouldn't be a concern but it is because under the hideous looming deadline I MUST make my wordcount every day and binge writing at the end is pretty darn stressful.

Yesterday putting my chapters together took about 4 hours. Today I stopped because I just can't go on right now, and I think something I just wrote for one chapter will have to be moved earlier.

A lot of THINKING and not just feeling/doing involved.

On the other hand, I will probably get my wordcount done while writing the transition scenes, those linking scenes already written. Bri walks into the house especially made for her, what does it look like? She eats her first meal by herself, where is she, what is it (and, heaven help me, it triggers a memory and backstory). So the transition scenes CAN occasionally go fast, but linking the chapters and trying to find a decent hook can be tough.

Well, you can see by my rambling that this morning's session tired me and it's definitely time for breakfast (I always write first).

Since I'm out of my frozen omlettes, I have to make one by scratch.

Take care, and may your creativity really spark today.

Updated Map of the Marshalls' Castle

Snowing quite hard today, gray and nasty, the streets are bad so I'm glad we did family get together yesterday and I hope my brother got his table saw off Mom's patio.

Been playing with graphics and yes, working on this map, too. If I had time, I'd design Castleton with Pro-Fantasy's City Designer, but that would suck up writing time...I think I have a better idea of it than Druida on Celta, though. Anyway, I've added places on the map. The Seamaster's Suite where Elizabeth and Bri stay the first night, then Elizabeth moves into Alexa's tower, the floor below Alexa and Bastien and Bri goes to Castleton and the house the city has prepared for her there.

I've also put Faucon's and Luthan's quarters on the map.

Cycles, Patterns, Themes

My family is having Easter at Mom's today and it is snowing. Ice and snow have been on the ground overnight. Didn't we do this Christmas?

And these are family get-togethers, not religious at all. My father was an atheist and Mom went back to her Catholic faith years after they divorced. So there will be ham and potatoes (the casserole of which I used in Keepers of the Flame), and incredible messiness since Mom is getting her kitchen floor replaced at the same time. This is how our holiday's go.

In writing we can use cycles and patterns to good effect, outlining themes. If I were the protagonist whom the book revolves around, the weather could be seen as isolating me...for good, letting me move from the work force into the inner creative life...or for bad, true isolation, not much contact, too much loneliness driving me mad, forcing me out.

And it could be used as challenges, a learning curve. Why does Robin never gas up her car when it's WARM? That low tire still needs air, if the protagonist had taken care of that problem when it was in the 60s, she wouldn't be worried about it now....

So watch the weather in the book, you can use it as a pattern to reflect your characters, have it point to the theme.

May you be warm and cozy today.

I walked into the bar for some soup and came out with....

Today (Monday, which is yesterday for you all), I finished reviewing my page proofs (galleys) for Heart Dance. I think I told you that the page proof/galley part of the process is when I get the most heebee jeebies. I handed these off to my friend who line edits for me and who did a wonderful job, as always (I referred to Trif Winterberry as Trif Winterberry, Trif Clover AND Trif Holly and she caught them all, also a lot of punctuation that should have been caught by me or the copy editor). But I looked at all her tabs and fixed what needed to be fixing. I added about 10 lines. I would have liked to have read it, but just didn't have time.

Anyway, I don't eat while I'm working, so by the time I finished and took them to the post office to overnight them, I was hungry and it was time for the local bar/restaurant to open. I went in for soup and decided NOT to sit in the far back where I usually would because last time I did I was ignored and finally got up and left. So I took the front booth.

And looked up.

Our local places always have art for sale. This floral piece caught my eye because of the gorgeous color...peach and rose and yellow and jewel greens and sapphires, etc.

It is a watercolor, which, of course, means that it's an original. I doubt the artist made any prints. And the price was very reasonable. And it has that watercolor technique with different textures.

By the time my meal came, I'd decided to buy it.

And I thought of the satisfaction I would give the artist. The show was new (I was in there a week ago Wednesday with my mentor). No other paintings had been purchased -- so she'd be the first to sell. I printed SOLD on the little card, because I think the piece deserves to be seen for the whole show, and it would leave an obvious hole. I'll let the artist decide whether she wants to put another piece up instead and give me MINE.

So, not only did I get a wonderful piece of art which could hang in any of my different colored rooms, but I got the satisfaction of imagining the pleasure my purchase of the piece would give the artist.

May you know pleasure from your work today, too.

I heard but I didn't listen

I live on a somewhat busy street, so I am used to judging the day and the time by the sound of car wheels travelling along. For the last couple of weeks, there's been birdsong in the mornings, perhaps waking me up, and I vaguely noticed it.

This morning I realized that I'd heard the birds, but I hadn't listened. So I lay in bed and listened. There are, of course, no good words to describe birdsong. I can say whir-whir-whir-whoooo-chirrup and you might or might not be able to guess the bird I was listening to. And there were about three different types, and a variation on one.

It's one of those things that must be experienced, and listened to. So I did, until the birds flew away.

And dawn broke and the sun streamed through my windows.

May you listen today and be cheered by what you hear.

David “Dax” Maddox was the perfect street cop—until a botched burglary raid cost his partner his life and Dax his ability to see color. Now, with his world gray, Dax has only one mission: to take down the murderer. And he’ll use anyone—even a sexy thief with questionable ethics—to get justice.

Soon Dax and Raven are forced together as pawns in a madman’s scheme. From the heart of Cuba to the New York art world, they find themselves in a race against time to stop the ultimate revenge.

SUCH AN INTERESTING CONCEPT!

May your world be full of color today.
