I was thinking lately that I've spoken more about my daily life than writing and publishing.
So, if you REALLY want to be a writer, here's the best advice I can give you.
Never quit.

LOL, Janice. The business is hard, but if you have the talent and determination, you WILL get published. You just don't quit before that happens. I wrote about 8-9 years before HeartMate, my 4th full manuscript, was published.....
