Need FAM advice

Need FAM advice for Heart Secret. I have one kitten for the hero (who just moved in on him), nothing for Artemisia Mugwort, a serene soul and a Healer who lives with her Family (parents and sister Tiana, friend in Heart Search).

No Fam has shown up for her (and I think I'm halfway through the book), and I have no twist for the Fams. So let me know.

Reward: Reading Heart Secret as I write it/go along as Beta, OR (your choice), Heart Secret ARC when it's done OR ARC of Hearts And Swords.

Many thanks, Robin

Oh, thanks for the chance to input! I love the world of Celta. Since Artesimia's personality is serene, it would be cool if she has a Fam who's a bit of a 'rough around the edges' grump. Some one who'll push her to step out of her comfort zone.

I think it's time to have a fluff(rabbit) front and center as a fam, Vinni has one, yes, but since the story concentrating on him hasn't been written, we haven't really had much about these animals. And it'd be perfect, sitting in her lap, being stroked, allowing her to maintain the illusion of serenity she has become known for, even as passion explodes for her new heartmate.

Pick me, I wanna beta read!

my ideas would be to have Lark or Laev (as a part of his promise to watch out for her) give her a kitten whose sire would be the healer cat Phyll

I've been introducing my daughter to all of the Fam sections of your books as I've been rereading the series this week. What a great opportunity! We feel that a Fox Fam would be the best choice for Artemisia - they're smart, and adventurous and love challenges - we feel that a fox Fam will see part of his/her duty as a Fam to help draw Artemisia out of her serenity - and we all know still waters run deep.

I have a couple of suggestions. How about a fam that was in an accident that needed healing like a pregnant cat. Or a fam from some one she couldn't heal but the fam helps her get over not being able to heal the person.
I'd love to be a Beta reader on anything you write.

My first thought was that it could be a momma cat who would be willing to adopt other babies, a nurturing soul.
But, I keep seeing a singed and injured fox kit, mostly healed and anxious for a chance to be part of a healing team.
What ever you decide will turn out just right. Can't wait.

How about an starving or maimed abandoned baby fox that shows up in their garden? A fluff could work too, although I'm leaning toward a fox. It may be the survivor of a fire, accident, or predator attack.

Well, DUH, I MUST remember that the stories I've written that aren't out yet...there's a housefluff in that, and a fox, two dogs and a cat...

You know, I'm a little stuck in the story and have decided that this is the perfect place to introduce the new Fam...whatever it is!

Also, re the grump, she is dealing with the grumpy BalmHeal Residence who loves her best.

Kelly! What a wonderful compliment that you're reading to your daughter bits of my story. And, you know, I'm sure you must be storytelling, too! Around the romance bits. ;)

Even though you've never mentioned them in Celta, my (slightly odd) immediate thought was "tortoise". I assume (my mind confuses even me) it's because I consider them the most tranquil & serene animals. A fox fam might be good - they can be calm & wild at the same time. Or a very messy puppy to give her a bit of action - my dog chewed through a wooden sideboard when he was little & frequently ambushed picnickers in the park & they have a slight antibacterial in their saliva so they're healers too! It would also be interesting if you decided to branch out to birds as fams (I hold my hands up to a bit of birding) especially when you consider parrots & corvidae for intelligence levels - blue jays are pretty but crows are my faves (I'm superstitious for magpies but they do have a funny curiosity).

You have mentioned horses and how fragile they are compared to other animals on Celta. How about she has to ride somewhere and unexpectedly bonds with the horse?

I like Tannum's idea of a housefluff.

You haven't had any bird fam yet so why not a bird

Do they have owls on Celta? I could see her with some kind of raptor, which is so unlike her.

If you're introducing a new type of fam pet, what about a monkey? Certainly able to get into mischief, and I love the whole sentience aspect for the monkey tied into an evolution vs religion theme, did the monkey evolve into a fam pet, or did goddess bestow sentience on him, as far as that goes, what exactly is happening to fam's to give them sentience? :)

Maybe a young dog descendant of Strother - Lahsin Holly's FamDog (the truffle hound.) He recuperated at BalmHeal Residence when he first met his FamWoman.
Or a mole - aren't they supposed to know where all the HouseHearts are?

I like the bird idea also. Why not combine a raptor bird, (eagle, falcon, owl, hawk, raven, etc.) with a singing bird, (like a canary, for example. I know there are many but I can't remember them now.)
It has the healing effect of the music, one of the most healing things in the world, and the wildness of the birds of prey.
It can have an injured wing and she helps heal it (or she take it to D'Ash for healing), and when it is cured, it dosn't return to the wild, but searches for her and becomes her Fam.
It dosn't matter the type of Fam you choose, I bet it will be great as allways. I can't wait.

P.S. - I hope you will put a bird Fam in one of your books.Does the Phoenix exist in Celta? I know it is a myth bird, but with the mutations in Celta and the diferent types of Flair, it seems it can exist. What do you think?
Well, I hope it helped and gave you some more ideas for your future books.
Good luck and happy work.

Although I am a big time cat person, I also think a bird would make an interesting addition -- unless Fams are limited to mammals. Birds and kittens make a volatile combination; to deter kittens from playing with the fluttering ones, we have a "ceremonial tail bite" (a few tail hairs are sacrificed). No matter how big the kittens grow, they never forget that birds have more defenses than the cage bars.

Oops! I didn't mean to trigger a bird campaign. . . . but if the feather fits! Bird! Bird! Bird!

Ferret. Mongoose Marten.

Squirrel. Chipmunk. Skunk (thinking Disney)

Those little things that make subterranean ways. One appeared in Heart thief?

Beaver.

I agree with Gina G - we have only really met "Tal" the mole in Heart Thief.... and less problems than introducing new birds etc...You have already established Moles are loyal and trustworthy of secrets (repair Silverfirs house heart) and Artesimia has many secrets....
Tal & Artesimia???

How about a small mouse-like creature. Something she could carry in her pocket.

Why has no one voted for a lizard or snake yet? My niece has a small corn snake and I think Snakey is about as sweet a critter as you'll ever find. Or a gecko. There's a gecko in the family, too, and I always imagine his voice being reallyreallyfastandblurredtogether.... Followed by really long pauses as he just sits there and pants. :-)

That's true Silver Phoenix, my youngest brother has a leopard gecko, so cute except she's forever trying to bask on my cleavage! With regular handling most reptiles are very friendly.

Maybe she shouldn't have a fam; and that's why you cannot imagine it. There are people that are wonderful but have no affinity to animals.
Forcing things doesn't work.

Well, I think if she is mellow her fam should be a little wound up or silly. Something to contrast her or bring out a different part of her personality.

I want her to have something to cuddle. I like the idea of a bird but they don't cuddle well.

I do like the idea of a mole but I fear they will spend to much time in dirt.

I like the idea of something hiding in her hair.

A blue rat? Sugar gliders? Ferret? chinchilla?

It should be fun with a cat lol

I'm leaning towards a Skirrl.

They were introduced in HeartMate as a favorite hunt for Zanth, but as the generations progress I could see them becoming sentient enough to be Fams.

They would contrast a serene personality nicely with their quick chatter, darting movements & twitchy tails.

Perhaps she meets up with a family of Skirrls that the male interests Fam Kitten is hunting & she needs to rescue it?

Also, I can absolutely imagine a scene with its cheek pouches stuffed full of food & its little Skirrly paws in together trying to look all innocent after snatching a treat from the BalmHeal kitchen!

So far all the Fam's have been hybrids of Earth why not some unique to Celta? Something a little wild and fun loving that can help Artesimia grow more into herself.

A slashtip. They're dangerous and feared, wild, native to Celta and some of them could be sentient but no one would know because they're avoided if at all possible. I think that Artesima would be willing to face one down to help someone. I also think a slashtip would work for Tiana.

Hi Robin! I just finished a Heart series reading marathon in a little over a week's time (a friend recced the series to me). Anyway, I was wondering what would happen if Artemisia had a horse for a fam. It would be a nice alternate way for her (as a healer) to travel, particularly during times when she might be drained of flair.
